Bargaining Update

BREAKING: 72 HOUR STRIKE NOTICE SERVED!

Date Posted: June 3, 2026

ATTENTION ALL UNIFOR LOCAL 4276 MEMBERS:

At 8:47 a.m. Pacific Time, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, your bargaining committee served 72 hours strike notice on the Company. This means if we don’t get a fair deal on June 4 and 5, we will be going out on strike Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

Please keep an eye on your emails for further updates. Do NOT walk off the job until the union authorizes.

Strike pay is $350/week, provided you complete 24 hours of weekly assigned picket duties. Strike shifts will be scheduled as closely as possible to your current work schedule. For example, if you work the night shift, you will be on night shift picket duties. We have two strike coordinators working on a more detailed schedule, and picket line supplies are ready to go! Members will receive an orientation on their first picket shift.

The Company thinks you are not serious about striking. Let’s be clear: We had a 99% YES mandate for a strike vote, the highest in the hotel’s history. We have heard from you loud and clear that the affordability crisis in this city is serious. We will not stand down on our fight for fair wages and protection of your livelihood.

In solidarity, Your Bargaining Committee: Neil McKay, Izzy Miranda, Shondra Ronan, Patty Ross, Raymond Gairdner, Jennifer Moreau.

Bargaining update: Empress, Unifor Local 4276

Date Posted: April 17, 2026

The Union and Company were scheduled for three more days of bargaining this week, from April 15 to 17, following our all-time record-breaking strike vote of 99%.

Unfortunately, the Union was forced to break off talks on Thursday, April 16. Tension and frustration are rising, while the Company doesn’t seem to be getting the message. The wage offer percentages on the table are lower than every hotel Unifor has negotiated in the last three years. This is simply unacceptable, especially with a 99% strike vote!

Furthermore, there are serious concerns about outstanding issues related to benefit improvements, housekeeping workload, protections from patron abuse, scheduling in the spa and more.

NEXT STEPS: We are preparing for a potential strike. This includes an updated press release going out today.

We will be sending more updates as the situation develops.

On behalf of the bargaining committee, thank you for your strong show of solidarity and support. We hear you, and we are fighting for you!

Bargaining update: Empress, Unifor Local 4276

Date Posted: April 2, 2026

Thank you all for your incredible show of support at yesterday’s strike vote. The 99% YES result is an all-time record for Unifor Local 4276—a powerful message that we are standing together. Congratulations!

Negotiation Status The Union and the Company met for further negotiations. Unfortunately, the Company has yet to hear us; we saw very little movement from their side despite our record-breaking mandate.

In a final effort to reach a fair agreement, we have agreed to one more round of meetings from April 15 to 17. If the Company remains unwilling to move, we will move toward escalating job action—a step we take with the utmost seriousness.

Member Safety Survey: We Need Your Voice Our fight isn't just about wages; it’s about your safety on the floor. Preliminary results from our survey on patron abuse are deeply concerning, with reports of:

  • Sexual assault and harassment

  • Racism

  • Pressure to continue serving intoxicated guests

To ensure the Company cannot ignore these issues, we need a larger sample size. If you haven't yet, please take five minutes to complete the survey:

We will continue to keep you informed as we approach the mid-April sessions. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to any member of your bargaining committee.

In solidarity,
